Holmstroem, Holmström, Surfing, German surfing
From the 4th to the 18th of September the Holmstroem Crew from the very northern part of Germany went on a surf trip to Scotland. What they experienced was absolutely thrilling. The Journey began in Edinburgh, where the three dudes Tobias, Jonas and Fabian arrived. After renting a car they drove up north towards Aberdeen where the three guys pitched their tent for the next week. The conditions were exceedingly good the next couple of days. A high east wind caused funny North Sea windwaves. Joined by a few locals the German riders searched for a good spot preferably sheltered from the wind by a jetty or a harbor. What they found were a few good coves and reefs for example Stoneheaven, Inverbervie and Nigg Bay. Especially Aberdeen harbor was a very good place to be. Big righthanders were rolling in, and it looked like a very promising surf. Some locals said that surfing is forbidden and that surfers would get arrested by the harbourpolice for ripping this spot. Nevertheless, the Germans went out and had a pretty good session with some amazing waves. It was a pleasant and funny surf and on top of that nobody from the crew got arrested by the police. The whole week was pretty successful and the three had great fortune with the waves which the North Sea offered them.

On the 9th of September the boys left this very cool surfing area with a lot of good breaks, smashing waves and beautiful nature. Their next destination was North Scotland. The forecast for Thurso and the nearby spots looked great. Magic Seaweed forecasted 15-20ft waves for Thurso, but on the downside a lot of wind too. The first days the waves were average high and the Germans had a couple of good sessions without wind. For the whole week they lived in a tent in Mr. Artists garden. It’s nearby Brims Ness and a good hint as a place to spend the night. After a few days the waves were getting bigger and Brims Ness was firing. Thurso didn’t bring it. Therefore  Jonas, Fabian and Tobias surfed the „Point“, the „Bowl“ and the „Cove“ with a few other cool guys and friendly locals. On the 15th the big swells came in together with dirty weather and high winds. The crew checked out Thurso and Brims but both spots were totally blown out! So they decided to drive to the West towards  Melvich and Sandside Bay aka Nuclear Beach. Melvich was pretty small but clean. At Sandside Bay pumped a perfect left over the reef. The decision was easily made to surf Sandside instead of Melvich. The sessions were pretty amazing, but called for a lot of paddlework too. The guys struggled with the radioactive contamination of that area. They really absolutelty hate nuclear power now! The next day the swell was humongous at Thurso East. The conditions were hard and very difficult but nevertheless the crew went in and surfed nearly double overhead walls. Stoked by a few big sessions with cool rides and heavy wipeouts the guys left the wonderful Northern Scotland to get their flight back to Germany.
Summing up one could say that this was an extraordinary and exceptionally thrilling trip. The three Holmstroem-Riders made a lot of new experiences, had great surfs, got to know some friendly Scots, Canadians and Welshman, saw beautiful nature and amazing cliff lines plus they drank lots of beer.
